Hanging Christmas Lights from Your Shingle Roof

It is that time of year again… holiday season! Which means that you will probably want to do some decorating to the inside and outside of your house. You will most likely be putting up Christmas lights in your yard and perhaps even your roof. Apex Roofing wants to make sure that you are safe while working anywhere near a roof, especially if roofing is not your profession, so make sure you follow these steps for hanging Christmas lights from a shingle roof.

It is very important to first note that you never want to attempt to hang lights when the ground, roof, or surfaces are wet or icy. Make sure weather conditions permit the use of a ladder, and always have a helper when you are working on a roof or using a ladder. Although hanging Christmas lights is a sure way of showcasing your Christmas spirit, your safety needs to come first when you are using a ladder to get to the roof or working with electricity!

The fun part, however, is picking out your lights for your roof! Do you like the traditional warm glow, or are you into colorful lights for your roof? Either way, you need to make sure that your power outlets are protected from rain or snow. There is also an option for battery powered lights, which should come with a weatherproof battery box.

The next thing you need to buy are clips for the lights to go on the roof. There are multiple different light clips, so make sure to pick the right ones for your ease of use. Also, when using these clips, you want to ensure that you do not poke any holes or do any damage to your roof shingles. Some light clips will clip to your gutter, and some need to be clipped to a roof shingle. Either way, this is your best option for hanging Christmas lights from your roof, rather than using nails or push pins. This should cause the least amount of damage to your shingles.

Here is an example of Christmas lights on a roof using clips:

Now, if you find that you are not comfortable using a ladder to access your roof, but you still want to hang Christmas lights, there are professional Christmas light installers that will come and put lights on your roof for you! Again, your safety comes first when it comes to any activity that requires access to the roof of a house, so always call someone for help if you are not confident being on the roof.

If you do end up causing any damage to your roof or roof shingles, you can always call a local roofing company to perform roof repairs or shingle replacement. Or perhaps you are up on your roof and do notice damage from old lights or any kind of roof issue. If you are looking for a roofing company in Macon, call the best of the best: Apex Roofing!
